L10 - ADVERBS OF TIME

today = em-ruż 

yesterday = di-ruż


the day before yesterday = pari-ruż


tonight = em-shab


last night = di-shab


night before last = pari-shab


tomorrow = far-dâ


the day after tomorrow = pas-far-dâ


week = hafté


month = mâh


year = sâl



10.1 Exercise
  • What day is it today?
  • What day was it yesterday?
  • What day is it the day after tomorrow?
  • What day is it tomorrow?
  • What day was it the day before yesterday?
As examples for above, imagine that today is wednesday. Then answers to questions of section 10.1 will be as follows respectively:
Em-ruz Chahar-shanbe ast.

Di-ruz se-shanbe bood.


Pas-far-da jom-eh khahad bood.


far-da panj-shanbe khahad bood.


pari-ruz do-shanbe bood



Now please practice the questions of section 10.1 with today's date.

10.2 Exercise
How do you say the following?
Today, yesterday, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, the day before yesterday,
year, last night, tonight, night before last, month, week?


10.3 Exercise
Learn the following in Farsi:
today, yesterday, the day before yesterday,
tonight, last night, the night before last,
tomorrow, the day after tomorrow,
week, month, year


10.4 Exercise
Write out the above on a piece of paper. Translate them to Persian.

L9 - Weekdays

Weekdays in Persian are really easy.

Sabbath = shan-bé = Saturday 



1 Sabbath = yek-shan-bé = Sunday 


2 Sabbath = do-shan-bé = Monday 



3 Sabbath = seh-shan-bé = Tuesday 



4 Sabbath = chahâr-shan-bé = Wednesday 



5 Sabbath = panj-shan-bé = Thursday 



But Friday = jom-éh

On which days do you have Meetings?
On what day do you do your Personal Study?
On which days do you go in the Field Service?


9.2 Exercise
Which new words should you learn to help you remember the days of the week?
Repeat these words.

Think about the following:


  • What day is it today?
  • What day is it tomorrow?
  • What day was it yesterday?

L8 - UNITS OF TIME

Hour = sâ 'at



Half = nim


Minute = da-ghi-ghe


Quarter = rob'


Order of Time:
Time up to the half hour is given by adding the minutes to the last hour, using (and) pronounced 'o' :
Hour – Number – Connective (and - pronounced ‘o’) - Number of Minutes – Minute
Eg: 1:05 = sâ 'at - e - yek - o - panj – daghighe



2:15 = sâ 'at – e – do – o – rob'


Time on the half hour is expressed: 7:30 = sâ at – e – haft –o- nim


Time after the half hour is given by using به 'beh' (to) followed by the next hour as in English.
Number of Minutes – Minutes – to (=beh) –Hour

Eg: 3:52 is 8 - minutes - to - 4 = hasht – daghighe – beh – chah'âr


5.45 is Quarter to 6 = yek rob' – beh - shish

Half past 10
A quarter to 9

Look at the clocks/your watch regularly and say the time in Persian.

L7 - TIME

The word sâ-at (ساعت) in Persian has several meanings.  It can mean Hour or a segment of time. It can also mean Watch (instrument to measure time) 


What is the time: sâ-at chand ast?  ( ساعت چند است ؟)
Or
What is the time: che sâ-atist? (چه ساعتی است ؟)




1 o'clock: sâ-at-e yek (hour 1)


7.1 Exercise
How do you say the time from 1am - 12 noon?


7.2 Exercise
Now practise saying the time and indicating what time of day it is. Use the existing audio provided as a model


4 in the morning - sâ-at-e chahâr-e sobh


7 in the morning -
6 in the morning -
3 in the morning -
6 in the evening - sâ-at-e shish-e shab


8 in the evening -
10 in the evening -
9 in the evening -
4 in the afternoon - sâ-at-e chahâr-e bad-az zohr


2 in the afternoon -
5 in the afternoon -
12 midday - sâ-at-e davâzdahe zohr
